Smart redistribution of food

Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is exploring the best logistical and storing practices for the distribution of surplus food and developing new food distribution channels and applications.

The project is analyzing the efficacy of the regulations on the redistribution of foodstuffs, the expiry dates of foodstuffs and other package markings in cooperation with authorities and other parties. In addition to this, efforts are being made to resolve challenges hampering the use of surplus food.

The subproject is also examining the amounts of lower-grade products used as animal feed and assessing whether or not these products could still be used for human consumption. Additionally, the project is examining the volume of slaughterhouse waste that would be viable for human consumption and the conditions under which these products could be used as human food.
